Katherine Johnson, one of the unsung American heroes, a mathematician, a NASA employee who helped get men into space and on the moon, has died at 101 years old. Ms. Johnson represents the greatest example of women who paved the way for all women, especially women of color, in math, science, and engineering, and she did so for a very long time without the right to vote in this country. Think about that.
I’m so grateful that Barack Obama finally brought her to the forefront of American History by honoring her as he did. So many women, especially black women in America, have fought long and hard, harder than white women, facing the racism and sexism that claimed women were bad in math and science, and that black women were just simply incompetent.
Rest In Peace, Ms. Johnson. Thank you for inspiring generations of little girls of all colors and backgrounds.
